TIRRC Fights Against Anti-Immigrant Law
In late June, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen signed state Senate Bill 1141/House Bill 670 into law, in opposition to the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and other immigrants’ and civil and human rights groups. The law requires that every jailer in the state inspect the immigration documents of every person detained, absent specialized training, funding, oversight, or access to federal immigration databases. Moreover, the law requires jailers to determine whether someone is in compliance with complex, federal immigration laws. Advocacy groups warn of the potential for racial profiling, as under Arizona’s recently passed anti-immigrant bill.
