As the mother of an African-American son, his whole life I have worried for his safety in general knowing that the color of his skin might one day be motivation enough to hurt him. One day we went to his brother's tennis game at the high school, where a school official and a police officer questioned me and my son. Over and over again they asked why we were there. It became clear that watching my African American son walk across the parking lot was reason enough to question him, even though no one else was questioned that day. As far as I knew my son was the only person of color there that day.
